Ontoko tatami bed
We were inspired by a 1200 year old bed from the Todai-ji temple in Nara. We studied in detail its structure and design to invent a traditional bed adapted to our time. Our Ontoko tatami bed is made only with wood from forests in Japan.
The frame is made of layers of birch wood from Hokkaido (in northern Japan) and produced with minimum impact to the environment. The older the wood gets, the more refined its texture will become.
Fragrant cypress wood is often used in Japan to build temples and houses. We chose cypress wood from the island of Shikoku for Ontoko’s bed slats.
Made from threads made of washi (traditional Japanese paper), this special tatami is abrasion resistant and provides good air circulation. Underneath, a sheet of linen felt, a thin insulation board, and a polyester fabric are layered to create a truly unique Iwata original bed.
